Town just outside the Capital City of Kingston, was established as the
country’s Capital City by the Spaniards in 1534. Much of the town was
burned in 1655 by conquering English troops.
Island takes you on a tour of this fascinating town and other en-route
points of this historical interests as follows:
- Drive-by tour of Simon Bolivar’s statue in the National Heroes Park
commemorates a visit by Venezuelan Hero to Jamaica.
- National Heroes Park dedicated to past Heroes and the tombs of
contemporary Heroes.
- A guided tour of the Institute of Jamaica, with exhibits forming part
of the natural history museum.
Spanish
Town square, where the cathedral stands on the site of a Spanish
Chapel destroyed by Cromwell’s army. The present building is the
second oldest foundation on the island. In the square can be seen the
façade of "Kings House" destroyed by fire in 1925, a statue
of Rodney sculpted by Bacon, the remains of the Court House, the Folk
Museum and the National Archives.
- Devon House for lunch. A beautiful example of Georgian architecture,
has a grog shop, a coffee terrace, a gourmet restaurant " The
Devonshire" and craft shops attached.
